Sunburn 04:40
This time when it rained there was no flood - just a massive screaming silence from above. No beasts to catch, no two of a kind; as I recall it was just you and I sitting in our boat along the shore, sunburnt by the smile that you wore. On the Mount of Olives I did sit. Watched the angels try the fires that they lit. Burned their little hands down to the bone, but now that I have learned to be alone I think I have a plan, I know the score. I’m sunburnt by the smile that you wore. Yonder blue is wild and untamed. Green lions grow the blue sky in their manes. My mind is aching for an empty lot or a bathtub full of water for my thoughts. And growing pains have made my brain so sore and sunburnt from the smile that you wore. They said the divine was like a string: shook with the resonance of each and every-thing. But I have loved the sound of locust swarms, of Babel-towers and of lightning storms so the quiver of a string is still more mild than a sunburn from your smile. Archimedes said “this crown ain’t gold”. The water in the tub barely rose. But roses must be gold for you and I who cannot shout “Eureka” at the sky. Roses must be gold for we are poor - sunburnt by the smile that you wore. Caesar marched his army in to Rome and carved his name on every stone. Buildings towered up day by day, but the hourglasses sand fell the other way. Now Caesar’s lying dead under the floor - sunburnt by the smile that he wore. Oh, and when your lips did part my skin did boil like the red rays of the sun upon the soil. But living in that soil made me strong so dying in the sun don’t seem so wrong. And all that I would need’s to be ignored sunburnt by the smile that you wore. This time when it rained there was no flood - just a massive screaming silence from above.

Public Eye 04:31
Shut your windows - the ghouls are out tonight. They’re gonna read you when they’re terrified, you’re an open book, all right. They’re gonna treat you like an artifact ‘cause you’re not one of them. I guess that makes you special, like some kind of precious gem. Watch the clocks run out of time and the sun cease to glow. The battleships go off to war, and the bloody bayonets buried in the snow, Pick your poison - any kind - just make sure that it won’t kill. I’ve gotta keep you living - I know no one else will. vertigo… Make me over, I don’t like who I am. Change my eyes, my nose, my silhouette. Change anything you can. I’m gonna go down to the quarry and just start splitting stones. They say people will judge me on what I do when i’m alone. Way out in the open a star’s being born. We’re all gonna know her face - she’ll be begging for more. She’ll say “maybe if I hide away they’ll miss me when I’m gone”. We could hear here crying from miles around when she figured she was wrong. vertigo… Oh, the superheroes in the comic books couldn’t lift your heavy head. And the cars driven by the hand of god only went when the lights were red. Are you happy in the public eye? Are you happy with your friends? Or are you sitting in a coffin in a crater on the moon? Singing softly to yourself about the next thing you will do? vertigo…

Katie's Song 04:00
Well the lights next door are awful loud. I’ve been watching them burn for weeks. You can just get me to my sleeping church where I pray to God in my dreams. Everybody’s got some lock and key - they’re trying to keep us out. I just wish I knew what they were thinking about. Katie said “I know karma pays, but man, where do you get your cash?” “Did you steal it from a wishing well? Are you a master of a craft?” ‘Cause I’m just a poor kid looking for a machine to take my coin. And I wish there was some army I could join. Now tell me: is your conscience clear? Or are you waiting for a shift in gear? Have you found your city of gold? I just don’t believe the truth you told. Heaven hates the amputees. They ain’t got wings to fly. They’re just beat back by the northern lights and pushed out of the line. Said “I’ve been faithful for a while, I just don’t know why.” and I hope I won’t be buried when I die. Now tell me: is your conscience clear? Or are you waiting for a shift in gear? Have you found your city of gold? I just don’t believe the truth you told.

What if you skipped a holy stone? Would the water turn to wine while Rome was burning in the heat - a thousand miles deep? And the wolves of the valley would take everything you’ve got. And the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet as chocolate from a box. And oh, what if my kingdom came and all my people looked the same? You were me and I was you, like we were severed and regrew; and all my friends would tell my how good I looked. And the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet as the pages from a book. But here I am watching the volcano erupt. And I’m not gonna worry about the ones I love. Because all I see around is dirt and dust and I’m crying like every mother’s son. And oh, what if the fireflies in the evening air left you mesmerized? And the laws of circumstance taught your broken heart to dance? Your eyes would look at the slow returning dawn and the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet as grass cut from a lawn, Well I’ll play along no longer - whats all this about? You’ve kept me smiling till all my teeth fell out, And if you are able, I am sugar cane. And the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet by any other name. What if the one I’m looking for turned out to be my only lord? All day I’d bow and pray - like a statue I would stay. And they would make me young until I was too old to care. And the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet as the tangles in your hair. Well I’ll play along no longer - whats all this about? You’ve kept me smiling till all my teeth fell out. And if you are able, I am sugar cane. And the Rose of the Valley would smell as sweet by any other name.

Saint 06:24
I’ve tried to lead the righteous path - been verdant as a summer’s day. and golden as a grecian calf. I knew that autumn’s on its way. When all the birds are singing soft, cautious of the coming cold, and the beating wings that kept them ‘loft now count the days till they get old. Oh, but who’s the Saint of losing your hair? Spending your days in a rocking chair? Who’s the Saint of the time on the clock? Are you in love or out of luck? With the aperture of eyelids wide my dreams are naught but messy days which flow together like a tide and I drink its splendor in my gaze. There’s the rub, oh, theres the flight. There’s the cause to rage against! Against the dying love the light (and I am my own oldest friend). Oh, but who’s the saint of losing your teeth? Speaking in tongues with your tongue in your cheek? Who’s the saint of watching you walk? Are you in love or out of luck? I’ve lived a life of ignorance in a white hot haze of cloudy bliss. And i’m sinking like an accent ship, but upon my word you will be missed. Oh, but who’s the saint of moving so slow? The saint of the chariot swinging so low? Who’s the saint of getting unstuck? Are you in love or out of luck?

The Dead 04:48
Why will I never grow old Like the rivers that rage in my gutters? How will my bones know to grow beneath the winds that whip above my shoulders? Those rocks that you hold in your pocket were all once a mountainous range. And ain’t it funny how the dead go back from whence they came? And the love that you hold in your head, dear, is so akin to fame. Ain’t it funny how the dead go back from whence they came? I will die in the world that I lived in - scatter my ashes on the street. I will die in the house that I was born in - under the satin sheets, Do you wonder if the road forks in your favor? If the divining rod will lead you towards gold? Ain’t it funny how the spirit leaves the body quiet and cold? Oh, and I am but a child - I will talk when I am told. Ain’t it funny how the spirit leaves the body quiet and cold? Woke up this morning and I’d forgot my name. Stranded on the edge of space waiting on a train, I was hoping for that man in white to calm my shaking knees, Ain’t it funny how the wind whips through the trees. And now my eyes will be crossing me at every turn to lead me through my empty soul - you watch and I will learn oh, and soon the dead will be marching under a sky so plain ain’t it funny when you’re crying and it begins to rain? Oh fate’s a fickle fire - only some sparks become flame ain’t it funny when you’re crying and it begins to rain? Woke up this morning and I’d forgot my name. Stranded on the edge of space waiting on a train, I was hoping for that man in white to calm my shaking knees. Ain’t it funny how time won’t stop for me. Why will I never grow old Like the rivers that rage in my gutters? How will my bones know to grow beneath the winds that whip above my shoulders? And oh, the dawn reminds me of a book that I once read. And ain’t it funny how we’re marching slowly towards the dead?

Waning Moon 04:14
Baby, you’re a waning moon: Rise the tides, make monsoon. You take me back to the place you’re at told me “don’t lose your cool”. I went to the corner drugstore to find my favorite folklore. To haunt the ghost I love the most. He said “I’ve died for much more”. Red light turned green, I’m gonna walk. Found a place where I’m above the law. Found a place where I can be like you. Gonna constellate a star, ’cause baby you’re a waning moon. You’re the one who fought for tough love, flew the coop, told them all off all for the need of the hand that feeds. I know where you get your time from. Oh, they all got a different story, an arsenal on inventory, a place for right - just a kiss goodnight, a place to get their glory. Red light turned green, I’m gonna walk. Found a place where I’m above the law. Found a place where I can be like you. Gonna constellate a star, ’cause baby you’re a waning moon. You went out with your fancy lightning. You played God, said you were king. And when I’m young I’ll help you up, but for now I’ll do nothing. Red light turned green, I’m gonna walk. Found a place where I’m above the law. Found a place where I can be like you. Gonna make myself scarce, ’cause baby you’re a waning moon.

Snowbound 06:16
Snowbound, and the heart’s away. I have found a path to escape. I survey (like a bird of prey) my snowbound home when the heart’s away. Moon-drunk on a windy sea, I perceive all the stars around me (that light the air in the sighing breeze). I am moon-drunk on a windy sea. When the dogs come for my bones, when I’m dead and buried with the stones, take me north where the winds of winter stay. I am snowbound when the heart’s away. Windswept on a dusty plain, I was borne of sun and rain. But you’d complain if I ever were to change. I am windswept on the dusty plain. Sun-soaked in a crowded sky, was I born only to die? And brother why can’t you meet my eye? We are sun-soaked in the crowded sky. And when the dogs come for my bones, when I’m dead and buried with the stones, take me north where the winds of winter stay. I am snowbound when the heart’s away. And when the dogs come for my bones, when I’m dead and buried with the stones, take me north where the winds of winter stay. I am snowbound when the heart’s away. I have found a path to escape. I survey (like a bird of prey) my snowbound home when the heart’s away.
